It’s the last Sunday of January 2025. Onychomadesis 101.
Onychomadesis is a condition where shedding / separation of a nail(s) occurs from the nail bed. It can affect fingernails or toenails and involves one or multiple nails.
It typically occurs when the nail matrix (*where the nail grows), is damaged or temporarily stops functioning. As a result, the nail becomes detached or sheds in stages.
Nails may appear discoloured, thickened or deformed and may grow back not only more slowly but visible gaps or incomplete regrowth can sometimes be observed.
Several factors can lead to onychomadesis such as trauma / injury, infections, certain medications, nutritional deficiencies and other factors.
Modern Understanding and Awareness
In the 21st century, onychomadesis is better understood as a specific form of nail shedding related to the disruption of the nail matrix. It is now more widely recognized as a symptom of various underlying conditions and the medical community has become more adept at identifying and treating the underlying causes.
Contemporary studies on onychomadesis focus on its association with viral infections, systemic diseases, medications (like chemotherapy) and dermatologic conditions. The focus has expanded to include the importance of managing the root cause, as well as supportive care for nail regrowth once the triggering factors have been addressed.
Prevention Tips for Healthy Nails
- Minimizing Trauma. Such as avoidance of picking/biting or using harsh nail treatments such as gels/shellac is advised.
- Proper Nail Hygiene. Keep nails clean, dry and trimmed to avoid infections or fungal growth.
- A possible biotin or collagen supplement can be considered.
- Manage Underlying Health Issues. If you have a chronic illness or autoimmune condition, work with your healthcare provider to manage it effectively, as these conditions can affect your nails.
